Work and Life It’s All About Perspective

Some of the most awe-inspiring moments of life take place when unexpected transformations happen. Last week, I came across a video online of Jesse S., a man who decided to change his lifestyle and eating habits through practicing better nutrition habits and through consistent exercise. Jesse was able to lose over 300 pounds without the aid of weight loss surgery. In the video, Jesse attributed a lot of his physical transformation to the encouragement and support that he received from members the online fitness community that he joined. Isn’t that amazing? Sometimes, the encouragement that we receive can be such a key part of changing our perspectives, and when we change our perspectives, we can change our lives.
It really is true that we become like the 5 people who we spend the most time with. Our family, friends, and experiences impact how we see the world and often how we see ourselves. Unfortunately, not everyone has positive life experiences. The way that we think affects the way that we live. It all starts in the mind. The key to having more positive thoughts is to add them in. Just like penciling in an assignment in your date book, adding more positive thoughts into your day should and can be a deliberate action. Any time of day is fine to do this, but I find the best time to focus on positive thoughts is early in the morning soon after waking up to face the day. Here are a few lessons that I have learned during my journey to learning about the impact of perspectives:
Not Everyone Will Share Your Enthusiasm
Have you ever had a goal or a dream that you just knew deep in your heart was meant for you to accomplish? And, when you shared that goal with your family members and friends and they tried to talk you out of it, your perception was probably adjusted. Your family and friends may mean well, but they might have no idea how to encourage you to make your goals happen. You will have to accept that your loved ones might not be on your side every time, and that’s alright. You need to follow your vision and do what you are called to do. Focus on developing your own enthusiasm to fulfill your vision, and doing that will help you to keep your perspective.
Each Person’s Experience Is Unique
It is always nice to meet people whose experiences are somewhat similar to our own. However, it is vital to keep in mind that not every person’s experience will completely mirror your own. Please do not assume that one person’s bad experience is going to be your experience or that another person’s rock star performance is going to be what you go through. You need to embrace your journey because it is uniquely yours! Keep your perspective about your situation. There are experiences that you need to go through because you are meant to grow through those experiences and apply those lessons to your future.
Your Influence Is Huge
As much as your environment plays a big impact on your perceptions, the most important person who shapes and influences your life is you. Never underestimate the power that you have to shape your future and destiny. If you want to get more direction in your life, start by figuring out what in your life needs to change. Next, figure out the simplest steps that you can take to help you get the direction you need. Some things in your life will not come into fruition until you complete certain things. It’s kind of like baking a cake; in order for the cake to come into fruition it is first necessary to follow each step that the recipe requires. Once you figure out what the steps that you need to take, your perspective will be much more clear to you and you will begin to identify with it.
I used to go to a particular bar in my local area on a regular basis to see an entertainment group perform. I used to be a loyal supporter of that group. While I enjoy going to concerts, shows, and community events, over time, I came to realize that there are other more productive things that I could be doing with my time and I stopped frequently going to see that particular group perform. My perspective about the best way to spend my time changed, and I realized that there are other more interesting things that I could be doing. I also realized that I could someday regret not making immediate changes to how I spent my time unless I made changes right away.
I’m so happy that I changed my perspective and am being more conscientious about how I spend my money and my time, but I, like you, are a work in progress. Are you giving yourself permission to change your perspective? I encourage you today to think about what you’re doing and how you’re doing things. If you feel that changes need to be made, I hope that you adopt the right mentality that you are capable of to make the changes that you need to make.
