Work and Life Fashion, Passion, and Reactions Written by: Akua Hinds June 12, 2025
Fashion is a passion that will stand the test of time. Designers decide how our descendants will asses us in the future when they look at our photographs and what we were wearing long after we are gone. The trends that we embrace are as valuable as the trends that we choose not to follow. Fashion helps us to express ourselves, take care of ourselves, and feel like we are part of a community. When I attended the Milton Fashion Week Auditions a few weeks ago, it was like stepping onto the set of a platform that was created to make each person shine.
Watching the models walk down the runway to showcase their talents was both awe-inspiring and educational. Modeling is not as easy at it looks. There are many things that a model has to do, all at the same time. Modelling is not supposed to be about celebrating the model; modelling should be centered on showcasing the product. A model needs to be the canvas displaying the product in the way that the designer or creative director wants it to be displayed. There are different types of modelling of course, and a fashion show model should ideally have a confident walk, a positive attitude, and good facial communication skills.
A good model needs to have poise. One of the things that I most enjoyed about watching the Milton Fashion Week Show auditions was seeing the diversity of the models. Some of the models were very slim, some were medium sized, some were fuller figured. Many of the models were female, but there were male models auditioning as well. And, isn’t that the way it should be? After all, fashion is not just for women, and it is not just for men. Fashion and trends are not exclusive to people of a certain size. Fashion is for everyone to sample, appreciate, dive into, and enjoy.
I am very excited to see all of the beauty that will be on display at Milton Fashion Week next month! Each day, I have been wondering about what we will see. I’m curious to see the accessories that will be displayed too. Jewelry can (in my opinion) make or break a “look” that someone is trying to create. Fashion cheers me up, and it always leaves me wanting more. When I see beautiful people wearing beautiful creations, I feel inspired to strive to be more creative and to do my personal best to communicate a memorable message using aesthetics as my tools. It is powerful to realize that the clothes we are wearing started off as ideas in someone’s mind, then, designs were drawn on paper, fabrics were cut and sewn, and clothes were sold by a vendor before they were owned by us. I’m looking forward to celebrating all things fashion next month in the town of Milton. Hope to see you there!
